Turning an 18-year-old LeBron James into a comic-book superhero for Powerade.

In 2003, MELT helped The Coca-Cola Company turn an 18-year-old LeBron James into a superhero — literally. Powerade had signed the most hyped rookie in NBA history, but category conflicts meant he couldn’t appear in an NBA uniform. Where others saw a limitation, MELT saw an opportunity: build the King James persona as an original comic-book hero instead of a traditional athlete endorsement. Partnering with DC Comics, MELT produced a 10-issue collectible comic series distributed through Powerade’s Flava 23 gift-with-purchase program — 3 million comics, with nearly 100% retailer participation. The campaign launched at Bristol Motor Speedway with the King James mobile and the Coca-Cola Racing Family, LeBron arriving by helicopter to shoot free throws from the track. Interactive webisodes followed, years before branded digital storytelling became standard practice. Original issues now trade for around $1,500 on eBay — sports, culture and brand storytelling fused at national retail scale.
