MELT U WEEKEND READING LIST

Expand your horizons with our curated collection of helpful articles, videos, and other essential recommendations.

Some college students didn’t show up amid COVID-19, recession – especially at community college: “When Hannah Hyatt imagined her freshman year at Clemson University, she had a clear picture in mind: crisp fall mornings hustling by Bowman Field on her way to class, hanging with new friends at her dorm and Saturdays spent at a packed Memorial Stadium, cheering on one of the best college football teams in the country. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the related economic collapse, Hyatt, 18, is instead 250 miles away in Charleston, South Carolina, nannying for a 5-month-old baby girl, after deferring her enrollment.” READ MORE.

College admissions set for a significant change: “Universities have long served as “the gatekeepers to a prosperous life,” Jeff Selingo writes in a piece on LinkedIn. Up until now, the admissions process to enter this world has been “imprecise, ambiguous, and unfair.” But the pandemic has inadvertently upended the opaque selection processes used to screen prospective students.” READ MORE

NCAA issues COVID-19 guidelines for college basketball season:In a series of guidelines issued Friday, the NCAA suggests testing players, coaches and officials for COVID-19 three times each week and limiting access to court and bench areas during the 2020-21 college basketball season, which is scheduled to begin on Nov. 25.” READ MORE

The Sports Industry’s Gen Z Problem: “With more access than ever to a wider range of competitions, the men and women born between 1981 and 1996 developed an insatiable appetite for live sports, lifting leagues, teams, networks and brands to unprecedented heights. New research, however, indicates the next wave of consumers — Generation Z — is much less enthusiastic about sports.” READ MORE
